When either David or I leave the house whoever is staying behind with Ruby comes out into the stairwell. Ruby seems completely unafraid of heights and will peer down in between the floor for any sign of the departing parent. It's a useful ritual for our teary-eyed babe when I leave her with Marie too.

Poor mite... perhaps you ought to spare her the departing shot of the stairwell and just stay inside the front door... Apart from the fact that I would have nightmares about the possibility of her wanting to follow you straight down the stairwell... knowing how little sense they have of heights!
