No rest for the weary right?! The Pratt-Niemeijer-Hyland household had it's fair share of excitement over the thanksgiving holiday last week.
On Thursday morning babe Ruby developed another high fever. All in all she was in pretty good spirits, and thankfully (that's what I'm thankful for this year) she decided to resume nursing in all seriousness. They say to feed a fever, so even though she was refusing solids and fluids, she was happily getting lots of mama's milk. So we took her down to dinner with Bob and Varda about about a gazillion other people who all oohed and aahed over her, so she did just fine.
On Friday morning we were on the phone again with our awesome pediatrician because her fever wasn't breaking and we needed to decide if we were going to go visit gramma Pat, aunt Lissa and the cousins, Blake and Ellaina. He thought this was a new virus and as long as she was in okay spirits and not in pain, we should go. So we did. Ruby slept for almost two hours in the car on the way there and played with papa David the rest of the time.
And we loved seeing everyone again! There was plenty for Ruby to do, including attend a birthday party for cousin Trish's youngest, Makenna, who turned two. When not partying she was playing the piano with Ellaina, sitting with Blake, and trying to catch the cats. Gramma Pat cooked some awesome carrot ginger soup which she devoured--her first food in days! Her fever dropped. I got some quality time to myself driving back and forth to Boston on Saturday to visit with Mary&John&Marie&Ana Lucia and their huge huge happy family (they were celebrating a baptism). I returned with a new front-facing car seat for Ruby.
Our trip home was the kicker though. We left at Ruby's bedtime and she fell asleep almost immediately. David and I had some rare quality time with us both sitting in the front. We hit the Triboro bridge in Queens in record time. And then the car died. Just died. It was a great place to break down though. The police towed us off the bridge in less than 20mins and we followed the tow truck in a police car. Ruby loved the lights and all the attention she was getting from everyone. Once off the bridge we joined the AAA on the spot, arranged for a tow truck home and Ruby and I resumed our trip home in a car service. She has a much better view now that she has her new car seat and waved to drivers in other cars at pretty much every single stop light.
She was a trooper during her feverish few days and the broken-down car. It's amazing to see how she just goes with the flow and never stops waving at the world around her.
