Ruby is still in a huge art creation phase. Her favorite project is cutting paper into small small pieces, folding and gluing and then using tape to finish it all off. Over the past few weeks her art has suddenly appeared on our walls and tonight I saw our little artist-in-residence hanging it up!

Today Ruby and I spent the morning at her school for the Thanksgiving family feast. I finally got to see some of her class friends and their parents. And I had more time to talk with her main teacher and I continue to feel so happy how we lucked out with him.
I asked him about my major pet peeve of late, Thanksgiving and the unbelievably hypocriticial bullshit line that it's all about being thankful that the Nativre Americans helped the pilgrims (read this if you want to get frustrated too). He pretty much said that as a social justice activist he has real problems with most holidays and so he avoids the bullshit and focuses on what feels most honest to him. Did I say we lucked out with this teacher?! So this week he spent time talking about harvest festivals. Christmas will be about solistice.
Of course, this doesn't mean Ruby hasn't already figured out that christmas is about getting presents. When she asked me if she's getting any, I told her that her grandparents will be taking care of that! Ha.

Just as well : what would this poor mite do without presents at Christmas ? Totally agree with you about all these festivals BUT I take the line of your favorite teacher. I adapt or sometimes I do not. You can also have a good - and special time (= good excuse) - without thinking why you are making a feast. Or necessarily linking it to an event like Thanksgiving or Xmas. For instance : Easter is fun time because of painting eggs, hiding them for the kids and taking time off with friends. I couldn't give a stuff about the religious aspect.
At least that is how I think about it. And I love your pet upsets : good to talk about it and make other people aware of the hypocrisy!
