A few weeks back we were all in Detroit to attend the biggest Labor Notes Conference ever. I was mostly holed up in the conference hotel where I was wearing many hats: LWC staff organizer, helping the savvy conference organizer and my friend, Tiffany, organizing childcare for Ruby and a few other kids, hanging out with international guests for tie-Global, and just me, wanting to catch up with many amazing labor people and friends from all around the country. It was awesome.
Ruby and David were in and out. In childcare Ruby made a kite and all the kids went out to test fly them. David and Ruby also joined a bunch of other conference attendees to go demonstrate against a Michigan-restaurant with activists and leaders from the Restuarant Opportunities Center-Michigan. (The next day Ruby told me she had two new super heroes. I asked her who and she said Cesar Chavez and Mother Jones! At the demo they had huge puppets of these two great labor leaders.) And they also spent a few hours with David's friend in Detroit.
It was a big deal for us financially to all go out to Detroit for just a few days. But it's so wonderful to see Ruby grow up within our tendency in the labor movement. Just as much as David and I, she soaked up the energy and hopefulness that gets created when 1,200 troublemakers get together to talk, make trouble and organize. Si se puede!

Happy birthday Marsha!
Was vandaag met Wendela en de kids op stap. We hebben geprobeerd je te bellen, maar we bleken niet het juiste telefoonnummer te hebben. In elk geval een fijne dag!

Thanks you two! Had a quiet work day that day, but are celebrating today, when David gets home from a training he had to do...
