Happy birthday David!!!

We had a gorgeously relaxed day today, celebrating David's birthday. The weather was superbe, which is just a huge plus after a long winter. We got all our weekend chores done yesterday so we had *nothing* to do. And we were *all together* doing nothing, for the whole day--that has not happened for about a month.

This morning we chilled out around the house. Ruby and I made D's cake--carrot cake with blue icing. Ruby had insisted, for the past week, that David should have a blue cake (and she wants a purple one for her birthday, with sprinkles on the top and bottom). Then we planted some seeds in our garden, took the train to the park so R could feed the ducks and ride on the carousel a few times. We stopped for lunch at the Botanic Garden, R napped in the carrier during which time we walked to the playground, where Ruby played. Then home for cake and presents and an unexpected short play date with Sade.

Busy but relaxed. Loved it.

Except for the part where Ruby bashed me in the head and I bit my tongue, hard, in three places. She had just peed on the toilet successfully (2nd time!) and was so happy that when I went to pick her up, she jumped, which I was not expecting. Ouch. Hopefully all the blood and my short verbal outburst of surprise mixed in with pain won't be a deterrent to future toilet-using behavior. R was upset, but we reenacted the happy moment later, without jump ("I'll do it softly mama") and she seemed content with the ending.
